In the summer of 2001, I was yet again approached by the same production and directorial team who made the infamous and highly successful film ‘Trainspotting’, as well as ‘Shallow Grave’ and ‘The Beach’ to train one of their up and coming stars Naomie Harris for their forthcoming movie. It was to be a zombie flick written by Alex Garland and called ’28 days later’. I was enlisted to help build up Naomie’s physical on - screen presence. This involved improving her overall strength and fitness. A major part of her training was to develop her fighting skills with the use of a sword and hand to hand combat. Her role involved her maiming superhuman zombies so we trained to make her into a fighting machine. We trained 5 days weekly for over a month and her newly acquired skills can now be seen in this recently released horror movie. Naomie has gone on to feature in many highly successful British dramas, namely Zadie Smith’s ‘White Teeth’ and the BBC drama ‘The Project’.
